How are countries affected by and responsible for climate change? Are countries the right vehicles – the right organizational forms – for addressing climate change? What are the limitations and failures of countries (especially our own) in this work?

How does climate change and environmental injustice affect our communities? How do communities respond and adapt to environmental disasters?How do communities build capacity, resilience and infrastructure to resist climate change?

In the anthropocene, natural disasters are not natural. Rather, they are trace effects of an industrial and economic system that will—left unimpeded—accelerate climate change and drive Earth toward collapse.

To build a global climate movement, we have to address the asymmetries in the burden of responsibility and the burden of impact. This requires that we acknowledge the ways inequalities are deeply embedded in the systems that continue to produce and deny climate change, hindering our abilities to mobilize against it.

This panel considers the violent legacies of capitalism’s exploitation and appropriation of nature. It inquires into how views of natural systems as separate from human systems–political, social, and economic–may be part of the problem we face in confronting climate change.
